Chaetodon lunula (Lacepède [ex Commerson] 1802) —Raccoon butterflyfish ( Fig. 84 View FIGURE 84 ) Status at New Ireland. First recorded from St. Mathias by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 73), based on ZMH 11724- 11725. Specimens photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 1 Jan. 2007; another at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District, 8 m depth, by Dean Tully on 21 Oct. 2011; others photographed at St. KVG 17 on the Bismarck Sea side of northern Kavieng District by Serge Andréfouët on 18 Aug. 2014; a video of a specimen taken at Nubilus Island, off eastern New Hanover, 3–25 m depth, St. KR90, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 4.—General distribution: East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian and Line islands and Pitcairn Group, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia, New South Wales ( Australia), Lord Howe and Norfolk islands, and Rapa. Found on reef flats in lagoon and seaward coral and rocky reefs, including tidal pools, 0–30 m depth. Marine.
