Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens photographed in June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey (see Teitelbaum et al. 2013: 14). A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District , 3 m depth, by Dean Tully on 2 July 2011; a video of a specimen taken off Nubilus Island , off southeastern New Hanover , at 3–32 m depth, St. KR 88, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Cocos-Keeling and Christmas islands (eastern Indian Ocean) east to Hawaiian and Line islands and Pitcairn Group, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to northern Australia and Lord Howe Island. Found solitary, in pairs or in groups, in coral-rich areas of lagoon and seaward coral reefs, 2–30 m depth. Marine.
