Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a video of a specimen taken off Nubilus Island, off southeastern New Hanover, at 3–32 m depth, St. KR 88, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell); a specimen observed at Nusa Island , Kavieng District , 1–27 m depth, St. T 8, on 1 Nov. 2006, by Gerald R. Allen.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa, Mozambique Channel, Madagascar and Mascarenes to Hawaiian Islands and Pitcairn Group, north to southern Japan, south to Kermadec Islands and Rapa. Solitary, seaward coral reefs, 0–3 m depth. Marine.
