Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Emirau Island , St. Mathias Group by Kailola (1975: 165); a video of a specimen taken in Albatross Passage, southwestern Kavieng District, at 3–39 m depth, St. KR 51, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell). KFRS material.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2, 4.—General distribution: East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Line and Gambier islands, north to Izu Islands, south to Western Australia, New South Wales ( Australia), New Caledonia and Tonga. Found in shallow lagoon and seaward coral reefs exposed to mild or moderate surge; juveniles on the shore or in tidal pools, 0–3 m depth. Marine.
