Status at New Ireland. First recorded from St. Mathias as Glyphidodon brownriggi (non Bennett 1828) by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 67), based on ZMH 11933; a video of a specimen taken near Nusa Island, Kavieng District at 5–23 m depth, St. KR8, in 2014; a specimen observed at Nemto Island, New Hanover, 1–50 m depth, St. T23, on 7 Nov. 2006, by Gerald R. Allen.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 4.—General distribution: Indonesia east to Wake and Marquesas islands, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia, New South Wales ( Australia), New Caledonia and Austral Islands. Found on rubble-strewn surge channels, the outermost reaches of exposed reef flats, and the upper submarine terrace, 0–12 m depth. Marine.
