Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Ireland by Allen & Erdmann (2012: 744). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005; a specimen photographed by Serge Andréfouët off the southern tip of Bauddisson Island , Kavieng District, St. KVG15, on 17 Aug. 2014; a video of a specimen taken at Martha's Shoal, east of New Hanover, St. KR 154, at 6–20 m depth, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Central Indonesia east to Marshall, Line and Tuamotu islands, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to northern Australia and Lord Howe Island. Solitary or in groups, in coastal, lagoon and seaward coral reefs, 1–20 m depth. Marine.
