Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a video of a specimen taken off Nusa Island, Kavieng District, 2–18 m depth, St. KR32, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2.—General distribution: South and East Africa, Seychelles, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Wake Atoll and Pitcairn Group, north to central Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Western Australia, New South Wales ( Australia), northern New Zealand, New Caledonia and Rapa. Found in lagoon and seaward reefs, 1–20 m depth. Marine.
