Nomenclatural remarks. According to Stichel (1955), the gender of the genus name Hydrometra View in CoL is masculine rather than feminine; and consequently the name of this species should be H. gracilentus Horváth, 1899 rather than Hydrometra gracilenta Horváth, 1899 View in CoL . This proposed change seems to have been almost entirely overlooked by subsequent authors, and was rarely quoted and however never discussed (e.g., cf. Adlbauer 1979; Tamanini 1989; Andersen 1995; Aukema 2015).

Latreille (1797: 86) described the genus Hydrometra View in CoL without specifying its gender. Etymologically, the scientific name is composed by the Latin prefix hydro- (from the Greek word ὕδωρ [hýdōr] = ‘water’) and the Greek term Μετρης [-métrēs] = ‘that measures’, so literally “that measures the water” (cf. Oli and Magini 1987); comparable to the Latin word “ gĕōmetrēs, ae ”, a masculine name.

The word “ hydrometra View in CoL ” did not exist in classical Latin, but in the neo-Latin of the late 18th century, a word ending in “ -a ” was simply considered feminine. According to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999, Art. 30.1.3) “a genus-group name that is a Greek word latinized with change of ending, or with a Latin or latinized suffix, takes the gender normally appropriate to the changed ending or the Latin suffix”.

Finally, P.A. Latreille published his “ Précis des caractères génériques des insectes [...]” at his own expense in 1797 (cf. Michelsen & O’Hara 2014), so the year of description of the genus Hydrometra is here reported as 1797, even if until now it has been incorrectly stated as 1796 (e.g., Andersen 1995; Aukema 2015).
