Type species: Buenia affinis Iljin, 1930

Body moderately elongate, laterally compressed towards caudal fin. Head large, depressed. Snout pointed, shorter or equal to eye length; with gently sloping dorsal profile. Eyes large, dorsolateral, ¼ – ⅓ of head length, interorbital space narrow, ¼ or less of eye diameter. Anterior nostril short, tubular, erect, without process from rim; posterior nostril pore-like, near orbit. Mouth oblique, posterior angle of jaws below pupil. Teeth in outer and inner rows unicuspid and pointed and moderately curved inward. Chin without fold or barbels. Cranial roof covered by dorsal axial musculature. Branchiostegal membrane attached to entire lateral margin of isthmus. Pectoral girdle without flaps on anterior edge. Pectoral fin uppermost rays within membrane. Pelvic fin united to form a complete pelvic disc, oval to rounded; pelvic fin anterior membrane present, with smooth rear end. First dorsal fin VI; second dorsal fin I/6 to I/9; anal fin I/6 to I/9. Caudal fin rounded, shorter than head length. Body covered with ctenoid scales; 25 – 30 in lateral series; predorsal area, including nape, opercle and cheek naked; breast scaled. Head with anterior oculoscapular and preopercular head canals always present. Suborbital rows of sensory papillae a, b, c, cp and d present: no transverse sub - orbital rows of sensory papillae i.e. rows a and c, including cp, without transverse proliferation; row a longitudinal below rear part of eye; row c longitudinal below frontal and middle part of eye, but starting anteriorly with two papillae superimposed to each other; row cp as two larger papillae bellow a row, cp’ approximately below cp. Snout with three rows in median preorbital series; oculoscapular anterior longitudinal row x 1 divided in anterior and posterior sections; no interorbital papillae. Vertebrae (including urostyle) 27 to 30 (precaudal + caudal vertebrae: 11 + 16–17 to 12 + 18); dorsal pterygiophore formula 3 - 122100, one or two pre - haemal pterygiophores.
