Euschoengastia (Brunehaldia) Vercammen-Grandjean, 1960 : table; 1965: 94; Vercammen-Grandjean & Kolebinova 1966: 431; Vercammen-Grandjean & Langston 1976: 884; Kudryashova 1979: 73; Kolebinova 1992: 136.
Brunehaldia, Kudryashova 1998: 291 .
Type species: Euschoengastia brunehaldi Vercammen-Grandjean, 1956 , by original designation.
Diagnosis. SIF = 7BS-B-3-211(0)1(0).0000. fCx = 1.1.(1–5). Eyes absent. Scutum trapezoidal, with rounded or concave posterior margin; sensillary bases situated posterior to level of PL setae; AL and PL setae approximate to each other. Sensilla clavate, fusiform or pyriform, covered with setules. Two or more pairs of humeral setae. Scutal and idiosomal setae covered with long thin barbs.
Hosts. Mammals, rarely birds.
Distribution. Spain, Bulgaria, Ukraine, South Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey, Morocco, Egypt, Israel, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan.
Species included. Brunehaldia brunehaldi (Vercammen-Grandjean, 1956) [= Eushoengastia (Brunehaldia) aegypti Vercammen-Grandjean and Kolebinova, 1966 , syn. nov.], B. bulgarica ( Vercammen-Grandjean and Kolebinova, 1966) , B. curtinae ( Kepka, 1966) [= Eushoengastia (Brunehaldia) lucida ( Schluger, 1966) , syn. nov.], B. iranica ( Kudryashova, Neronov and Farang-Azad, 1978) , B. schmuteri ( Schluger, 1966) (= Eushoengastia ( Brunehaldia ) zahedanica Kudryashova, Neronov and Farang-Azad, 1978), B. silvatica ( Kudryashova, Neronov and Farang-Azad, 1978) , B. spalaxia ( Radford, 1957) , comb. nov., B. taurica Schluger, 1967 .
Remarks. In the description of the type species Euschoengastia brunehaldi , its author stated that the new species is a member of a species-group within the genus Euschoengastia , which is characterized by the wide (“en forme de bandelette ou “fasciforme””, i.e. band-shaped) scutum. He also declared the intention to describe this group under the name Fascutella . As a result, in some works ( Vercammen-Grandjean & Kolebinova 1966; Kudryashova 1998) description of the genus Brunehaldia was referred to 1956. Really, this name was created only in 1960, in the same work as Fascutella ( Vercammen-Grandjean 1960) . Both Brunehaldia and Fascutella were described as subgenera of Euschoengastia , and description of Fascutella was based on the type species having much more “band-shaped” scutum, than B. brunehaldi . Hence, the discussion of taxonomic position of B. brunehaldi given in its original description cannot be considered as the description of Brunehaldia .
