Remarks: As noted below, Belomitra aoteana bears a strong resemblance to B. climacella . Both have a short spire and a sculpture of numerous, evenly spaced thin raised cords that extend into the subsutural ramp. The two are tentatively kept separate because of their very distant allopatry and the non-planktotrophic larval development of Belomitra . If they were conspecific, the species would be expected to occur at, e.g., Fiji, Tonga or the North Island of New Zealand. However, no aoteana -like Belomitra has been found at any of these places; this can hardly be explained by different sampling intensity, as the North Island has been as well sampled as the South Island, suggesting that B. aoteana is a valid species endemic to the South Island of New Zealand.
