Holotype: ZIN 13733, Lake Baikal , opposite the village of Goremyki (Baikalskoe), depth 180 m, July 26, 1902, collected by A.A. Korotneff.

Paratypes: ZIN 13734, Lake Baikal , Buguldeika village, June 18, 1902, collected by A.A. Korotneff, one specimen (juv.) ;

ZIN 13735, Lake Baikal , opposite the Ulanur Cape and the Olkhonskiye Vorota Strait, depth 1300 m, 1902, collected by A.A. Korotneff, one specimen ;

ZIN 52093, Lake Baikal , opposite the Goremyki (Baikalskoe) village, depth 180 m, July 26, 1902, collected by A.A. Korotneff, one specimen .

Current status: Abyssocottus korotneffi Berg, 1906 ( Taliev, 1955; Sideleva, 1982, 2003).

Counts: D1 6, D2 15, A 15, P 16, C 23, vert. 32 (abdominal 9, caudal 23), two-pairs of pleural ribs.

Diagnosis: head is strongly flattened in the dorsoventral direction, resembling a duck’s beak; the eye is very small, diameter of eye is 1/10 of length of head; interorbital width wide, 1.4 times eye diameter; interbranchial width very narrow, contained 11 times in head length; originals and ends of second dorsal and anal fins on the one vertical; they are similar in length of base and number of rays. Coloration of the head and body are orange or light pink.

Proportional measurements as percentages of standard length of holotype (89.7 mm): predorsal length 35.2, preanal length 56.8, maximum body depth 15.9, length of caudal peduncle 8.0, depth of caudal peduncle 4.5, length of first dorsal-fin base 11.4, length of second dorsal-fin base 32.4, length of anal-fin base 36.4, length of longest first dorsal-fin ray 6.8, length of longest second dorsal-fin ray 8.0 length of longest anal-fin ray 8.0, pectoral-fin length 19.3, pelvic-fin length 10.2, distance between first and second dorsal fins 2.8, head length 37.5, postorbital length 19.3, head depth 14.2, head width 18.2, eye horizontal diameter 4.0, interorbital width 5.7, upper jaw length 15.2, interbranchial width 1.6, length of gill slit 17.9.
