Types

Holotype. Female on slide, China, Sichuan, Han He Ba, San Yan Dong (cave), 30 July 2007, coll. J. Lips (Lips-1438) . Paratype. Female on slide, same data as holotype. Holotype deposited in NJU and paratype in MNHN .

Description

Body length up to 1.95 mm. Ground colour pale yellow in our alcohol specimens.

Antenna 3.9–4.7 times as long as cephalic diagonal. Antennal segments ratio as I: II: III: IV = 1: 1.7–2.0: 2.1–2.3: 5.0–5.2. Ventral side of Ant. I–III respectively with 4, 4, 2 long smooth straight chaetae. Distal Ant. II with 4–5 dorsal paddle-shaped chaetae ( Figure 7A View Figure 7 ). Ant. III organ ( Figure 7B View Figure 7 ) with two paddle-shaped chaetae; chaetae 7 and 9 much longer than others. Detailed chaetotaxy of antennae difficult to observe in our specimens.

Eyes absent. Lateral process of labial palp straight, as thick as normal chaetae, with tip not reaching apex of labial papilla ( Figure 7C View Figure 7 ). Subapical chaeta of maxillary outer lobe subequal to apical one; three smooth sublobal hairs on maxillary outer lobe. Labial base as MREL 1 L 2; R ciliate and 0.45 length of chaeta M; area posterior to mentum with many thickened scaly ciliate chaetae; X, X2 and X4 also modified as other chaetae ( Figure 7D View Figure 7 ). Dorsal cephalic chaetotaxy ( Figure 7E View Figure 7 ) with three sutural (S) and three macrochaetae in Gr. II; arrangement of chaetae on anterior part unusual.

Thoracic chaetotaxy shown in Figure 7F View Figure 7 . Th. II with three (m1, m2, m2i) mediomedial, one medio-lateral (m4), 11–12 posterior macrochaetae and three s-chaetae; p4–6 as microchaetae; an additional chaeta rarely present external to m1. Th. III with 14 macrochaetae and two s-chaetae; p2e, m5 and p5 as microchaetae.

Trochanteral organ with about 20 smooth spiny chaetae; nine in arms and 10 between them ( Figure 7G View Figure 7 ). Inner differentiated tibiotarsal chaetae finely ciliate with ciliations not closely appressed to axis ( Figure 7H View Figure 7 ). Unguis slender. Ungual basal paired teeth tiny, subequal and extremely close to the base; distal unpaired tooth absent. Unguiculus with a tiny tooth on outer edge. Tenent hairs pointed on all Tita ( Figure 7I View Figure 7 ).

Abd. IV 3.6 times as long as Abd. III along dorsal midline. Abd. I with three (m2– 4) central macrochaetae and two s-chaetae. Abd. II with two (m3, m3e) central, one (m5) lateral macrochaetae and two s-chaetae. Abd. III with one (m3) central, three (am6, pm6, p6) lateral macrochaetae and two s-chaetae ( Figure 7J View Figure 7 ). Abd. IV with four central (A3, A6, B4?, B5), seven lateral macrochaetae and at least 15 s-chaetae ( Figure 8A View Figure 8 ). Abd. V with normal pattern including three s-chaetae; numerous additional chaetae not shown in figure ( Figure 8B View Figure 8 ). Tenaculum with 4 + 4 teeth and one large striate chaeta. Ventral tube anteriorly with about five ciliate chaetae on each side ( Figure 8C View Figure 8 ); posteriorly with about 13 smooth and 11 ciliate chaetae ( Figure 8D View Figure 8 ); lateral flap with seven chaetae, two of them sometimes weekly ciliate ( Figure 8E View Figure 8 ). Manubrial plaque with two pseudopores and 3–4 ciliate chaetae ( Figure 8F View Figure 8 ). Distal smooth part of dens 0.9 times length of mucro. Mucro slender and bidentate with basal spine short, its tip reaching apex of subapical tooth ( Figure 8G View Figure 8 ).

Ecology

Troglobiont, only found in cave habitats.

Etymology

Named after the latin words “longi + ungula” (long ungula).

Remarks

This new species is typically troglobiotic. It is characterized by paddle-shaped chaetae on antennae, short lateral process of labial palp, unusual chaetotaxy on anterior part of head, ciliate R on labium, modified chaetae on ventral side of the head, elongate unguis and unguiculus, and reduced dorsal chaetotaxy (absence of macrochaetae m4i, m4p and p4 on Th. II, a4i, m5, a6i and p5 on Th. III, m2i, a2–3 and m4p on Abd. I, m3ep on Abd. III and A4 and B6 on Abd. IV).
