Type species. Phillipsia maccoyi Portlock 1843 .

Diagnosis. See Hahn & Hahn (1985: 462).

Remarks. Brachymetopus (Brachyemtopus) McCoy 1847 was re-diagnosed by Hahn & Hahn (1985). A full discussion of the subgenus and comparisons with other subgenera of Brachymetopus McCoy 1847 can also be found there. The following species list includes those originally diagnosed under the subgenus Brachymetopus (Brachymetopina) Reed 1903 , as it is a junior synonym of Br. ( Brachymetopus ) McCoy 1847 (see Goldring & Stubblefield 1957). The list also includes species not originally assigned to a subgenus (see Gandl 2011); however, Gandl (2011) did not include some of the Chinese species erected by Kobayashi & Hamada (1980).

Age and distribution. Upper Devonian to Upper Carboniferous in Australia, China, Germany, North America and Spain ( Gandl 2011).
