[1255 species (19 doubtful); Neotropical, Nearctic, Palaearctic, Ethiopian, Madagascan, Oriental, Australian, and Oceanic Regions]
Philonthus Stephens, 1829a: 23 (species included: laminatus , aeneus , splendens , politus , decorus , atratus , fimetarius , marginatus , concinnus , obscurus , varians , simplex , aterrimus , opacus , nitens , agilis , sanguinolentus , bimaculatus , cor[r]uscus, micans , and punctus along with 25 unavailable names; [Note: There is some dispute concerning the authorship of Philonthus . The name was used in 1827 and again in 1829. Westwood (1827: 58) described the larva of “ Philonthus politus ?” and presented fairly detailed characters and illustrations for the species. However, since he was unsure that the larva was identified accurately, we can reject as unavailable that use of Philonthus (Articles 12.2.5). In 1829 Philonthus was published in separate catalogs by both Curtis and Stephens. Tottenham (1962: 153) wrote that W. D. Hincks had informed him “... that he has seen definite evidence that the relevant [for date of Philonthus ] part of Curtis’ work was published in June...”. Earlier in the same paragraph Tottenham stated an August, 1829 publication date for Stephens’ work. According to a letter from N. D. Riley, a former Keeper at the British Museum (Natural History), sent to J. G. Franclemont in 1949 there is evidence to support a June 1, 1829 publication of Stephens’ “Nomenclature...” Unfortunately neither Tottenham nor Riley documented their opinions. Smetana (1995e: 51, 56) concluded no dates had been established and fixed the date of publication for both as December 31, 1829. According to evidence presented by D. Fletcher, 1979: xv, the date of publication was June 1, 1829 (see
note attached to the citation for Stephens, 1829a in bibliography)]). TYPE SPECIES: Staphylinus splendens Fabricius , fixed by subsequent designation by Curtis, 1836:
