Type locality. Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.
Bionomics. Immature stages of this species are found mainly in water accumulated in tree holes ( Lane & Cerqueira 1942). In Venezuela, adults of Sa. purpureus were collected with human landing catches ( Berti et al. 2015). In the present study, immature stages of this species were collected in a sapucaia nut oviposition trap ( Coleção de Culicidae 2023).
Arbovirus infection records. None.
Occurrence in Brazil. States of Espírito Santo, Goiás, Tocantins, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and São Paulo ( Lane & Cerqueira 1942; Lane 1953; Forattini et al. 1986a, 1986b; Carvalho et al. 1997; Guimarães et al. 2003; Cardoso et al. 2005; Hutchings et al. 2005; Tissot & Navarro-Silva 2008; Gomes et al. 2010; Reis et al. 2010; Mascheretti et al. 2013; Chaves et al. 2014; Müller et al. 2014; Dos Santos Silva et al. 2010, 2017; Orlandin et al. 2017; Abreu et al. 2019; Cunha et al. 2019).
Occurrence in other countries. Argentina, Bolivia, French Guiana and Venezuela ( Wilkerson et al. 2021).
