Notes. (1) In the original description of the species, Butler (1877) did not mention the number and sex of the type specimens. In order to stabilize the nomenclature, we hereby designate the female specimen labeled as “Type” deposited in the NHMUK collection as lectotype. (2) Daniel (1952) treated kurilensis as a junior synonym of B. pulchra . Nevertheless, Dubatolov et al (1993) listed it as a junior synonym of B. striata striata and subsequently, following Dubatolov et al (1993), this taxon was also placed in synonymy with B. striata striata by Bayarsaikhan et al. (2018) and Volynkin et al. (2019). However, the type specimen of this taxon (http://www3.nrm.se/en/lep_nrm/g/ miltochrista_gratiosakurilensis.html) is obviously conspecific to B. pulchra and not B. striata . Moths and the male genitalia of the population from Kunashir Island are similar to those of the Japanese populations therefore we follow the synonymy recognized by Daniel (1952).
Diagnosis. The forewing length is 11.5–14.0 mm in males and 13.5–16.0 mm in females. The species is characterised by the relatively short and broad forewing (the length to width ratio is 1.6–2.0 in males and 1.9–2.0 in females) and the nearly straight medial line of the forewing. The detailed comparisons with B. pulchra pulcherrima and B. laotiana sp. n. are provided below under the diagnoses of these taxa.
Distribution. Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Tsushima Islands), and southern Russian Far East (southern Kuril Islands (Kunashir and Shikotan Islands)) ( Inoue 1982; Dubatolov et al. 1993; Dubatolov 2008).
