Cardiastethus laeviusculus Poppius, 1915

( Figs. 1–3 View FIGURES 1–3 )

Cardiastethus laeviusculus Poppius, 1915: 7 . Syntypes: Taiwan, Daitotei (1 ex., sex unknown, MZHF) and Anping (1 ♀, SDEI).

Cardiastethus laeviusculus : Esaki (1926: 170) (listed, distribution), Hiura (1958: 39) (diagnostic characters), Hiura (1960: 43) (listed), Ford (1979: 51, 87) (listed), Zheng & Bu (1990: 27) (listed, distribution), Péricart (1996: 130) (catalog, distribution), Bu & Zheng (2001: 52, 93, 95, 229) (in key, redescription, distribution).

Type material examined. Lectotype (present designation): ♀, ‘VII, Anping \ Formosa \ H. Sauter V 1912 ’ [printed, plus ‘VII’ by handwritten at left anterior angle], ‘ Cardiastethus \ laeviusculus \ n. sp.’ [handwritten], ‘Syntypus’ [red square], ‘TYPUS’ [light red square]; pinned, segments II–IV of left antenna lacking; deposited in SDEI ( Figs. 1–3 View FIGURES 1–3 ).

Remarks. Almost no new information on this species has been published since the original description; most subsequent publications that mentioned it are catalogs and lists based on the original description. Péricart (1996) indicated that C. laeviusculus was likely a member of the genus Amphiareus Distant, 1904 based on an examination of the syntype deposited in MZHF. An examination of digital images of the syntype deposited in SDEI in course of this study confirmed that C. laeviusculus is a new subjective synonym of Amphiareus constrictus (Stål, 1860) . The following diagnostic characters of C. laeviusculus all coincide with those of A. constrictus : dorsum shiny, overall yellowish brown with apical part of endocorium darkened, sparsely covered with long setae; antennal segment II longer than head width across eyes; and hemelytra slightly constricted basally. Although the syntype in MZHF could not be examined, the syntype deposited in the SDEI, matching the original description and preserved in good condition for identification, is here selected as lectotype.

Current status. New subjective synonym of Amphiareus constricuts (Stål, 1860) .
