Discussion. — The genus Pentacora has a semi-cosmopolitan distribution, occurring in North America, Australia, Melanesia, South Asia, the Caribbean, and certain Pacific Islands (Galapagos), but being naturally absent from Europe and Africa (although Pentacora sphacelata Uhler has been introduced to Morocco and the island of Sardinia). Ten species are known worldwide ( Schuh et al., 1987), most occurring in association with saline habitats. A single species, Pentacora malayensis (Dover) , is currently described from Southeast Asia.
