Cichlidae View in CoL View at ENA ( Cichlinae )
Note: Some generic names are used to designate many species of cichlids: Parpra (C); Be (P); Akala (T); Agudede (B); Acará, Cará (Br).
Astronotus ocellatus (Agassiz, 1831) : paya, krombié-
rouj (C); aluago elselepo (K); masug, be masug (P); talepulu (Wa); oscar, cichlide oeil de paon (F); acará-açu, apaiari (Br); oscar, tiger oscar, velvet cichlid (E).
Note: Its name Kali’na seems to indicate the existence of this species in the swamps further West, but so far no scientific collection could confirm this. The Wayana name however applies to this species on the Rio Paru, while in French Guiana it applies to Aequidens tetramerus since Astronotus ocellatus is unknown from the inside of French Guiana.
Chaetobranchopsis australis Eigenmann & Ward, 1907 :

C); malishaba (K); matawale (Wa); aboné, tukunali (B); toekoenari (S); toucounaré (F); tucunaré-açu (Br); butterfly peacock bass (E).
Note: Palikur and Creole people are acquainted with Cichla monoculus living in the Uaçá basin and occasionally entering the Oyapock through the Juminã swamp spillway. The species is known by Wayãpi and Wayana people from the Rio Jari and Rio Paru basins. Cichla monoculus and Cichla ocellaris are two sister species that are hard to tell apart.
