Type material. Holotype, ovigerous female, 31 mm total length, with 18 eggs (diameter, 1.1‒1.5 mm), TALUD XII, Station 29 (19º19’37”N, 105º26’20”W), April 2, 2008, off Jalisco, SW Mexico, Pacific Ocean , 1609–1643 m depth, benthic sledge, R / V “El Puma” (ICML-EMU-12447). GoogleMaps

Type locality. SW Mexico, 19º19’37”N, 105º26’20”W GoogleMaps .

Etymology. This new species is named to honour Prof. Dr. Gordan S. Karaman, for his valuable contribution to the study of amphipods systematic. It is derived from the noun “karaman” in the genitive case.

Diagnostic description. Based on the female holotype (ICML-EMU-12447). Rostrum long; eyes long, slightly kidney-shaped; accessory flagellum scale-like; mandible with strong triturating molar; lower lip with fused internal lobes, inner margins setose; upper lip distal margin granulated; maxilliped palp 4-articulated, inner plate with 26 long marginal and 16 short distal plumose setae, outer plate inner margin with 10 tooth-like submarginal setae, and seven long, distal plumose setae; gnathopods 1‒2 subequal in length, chelated, both with three subdistal long tooth-like setae slightly bifid; pereonites 1‒7 dorsally smooth; pleonites each with long dorsal process; urosomite 1 with a wide mid-dorsal notch and a strong upright, blunt tooth; coxa 4 well developed, scythe-shaped, anterior margin sinuous, posterior margin strongly excavate with a subacute process, thin simple setae and small granules, ventral margin straight; coxa 5 with elongate posterior process, posterodistal angle strongly lanceolate, tip reaching to second half of epimeral plate 2, a medial setae row; telson posterior margin slightly serrate, with a medial distal cleft and minute simple setae, medially straight.

Complete description. Body ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ). Total length, 31 mm. Pereonites 1–7 dorsally smooth. Pleonites 1–3 strongly carinate; dorsal teeth of pleonites 2–3 about twice as long as tooth of pleonite 1. Urosomite 1 ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ) with a wide mid-dorsal notch, a strong upright blunt tooth; urosomite 2 shortest, urosomite 3 subelongate, both smooth.

Head ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ). Anterior cephalic lobule developed, produced, distally setose; rostrum reaching distal margin of article 2 of antenna 1 peduncle; eye large, prominent, kidney-shaped, with numerous ommatidies. Antenna 1 peduncular article 1 longer than 2–3 combined length; accessory flagellum scale-like; primary flagellum with 58 articles, setose. Antenna 2 article 1 with two ventro-distal, acute processes, and a single dorso-distal, acute process; article 2 with a dorso-distal, acute process; article 3 the longest; primary flagellum with 72 articles, setose.

Mouthparts. Epistome wider than high; lower lip ( Fig. 3C View FIGURE 3 ) with fused internal lobes, external lobes subtriangular, distal margins setose, inner margins with dense, thin, simple setae, mandibular processes subtriangular; upper lip ( Fig. 3D View FIGURE 3 ) with distal margin bilobulate, lobes granulated. Maxilla 1 ( Fig. 4A View FIGURE 4 ) inner plate ovoid, with 16 plumose setae along medial margin, four submarginal stout, short, simple setae, and numerous facial and marginal simple setae; outer plate obliquely truncate, 13 medial spine-like setae (from inner margin: 2 bifid, 1 trifid, 3 pentafid, 2 tetrafid, 2 trifid, 2 bifid, and 1 simple), a row of submarginal, short, simple setae, and numerous facial simple setae; palp 2-articulate, exceeding outer plate distal margin, article 1 short, article 2 long, slightly curved, with numerous facial and marginal simple setae, 7 subdistal short, plumose setae, and 11 distal short, robust setae. Maxilla 2 ( Fig. 4B View FIGURE 4 ) inner plate shorter and wider than outer, numerous facial and marginal setae, distal margin with 10 minute, robust setae, 30 long plumose setae, and 25 long, simple setae; outer plate with 17 long plumose and 10 simple setae distally, 6 marginal short plumose and 6 simple seta, and numerous facial simple setae. Left mandible ( Fig. 4C View FIGURE 4 ) with robust 7-dentate incisor, lacinia mobilis 2-dentate (right mandible 5-dentate; Fig. 4D View FIGURE 4 ), anterior margins both with marginal row of setae; molar slender, protruding, with marginal setae, triturative molar border with minute simple setae; palp 3-articulated, article 1 short, wider than 2–3, article 2 with 16 long and 11 short simple setae, article 3 with 23 simple setae and 3 distal simple setae. Maxilliped ( Fig. 4E View FIGURE 4 ) inner plate reaching half length of outer plate, with 18 long, marginal and 16 short, distal plumose setae, and numerous facial, simple setae; outer plate broadly rounded distally, internal margin setose, 10 submarginal tooth-like setae, seven distal, long plumose setae, and numerous facial simple setae; medial margin of palp strongly setose, tufts of simple setae on distal margins of article 1–3, distal half of dactylus with internal margin serrate.

Gnathopods. Coxa of gnathopod 1 ( Fig. 3A View FIGURE 3 ) long and slender, ventrally subacute, a medial row of minute, simple setae; basis linear, slender, margins with long and short simple setae; ischium short, two marginal and distal processes, a tuft of long, distoventral simple setae; merus slightly shorter than ischium, with tufts of long, plumose setae on posterior margin and distoventrally; carpus as long as propodus, posterior margin with tufts of long, plumose setae; propodus slightly expanded distally, posterior margin irregular with tufts of long, plumose setae, another proximal tuft of plumose setae, 3 subdistal, tooth-like setae, slightly bifid, of different length, near tip of dactylus, distal margin finely serrate; inner face of propodus with tufts of plumose setae; dactylus slender, slightly curved, inner margin finely serrate. Gnathopod 2 ( Fig. 3B View FIGURE 3 ) coxa slightly wider and longer than coxa 1, ventrally bluntly triangular, posterior margin with a medial process, another on anterior margin near base, medial elevation along outer face; basis, ischium, merus, carpus, propodus and dactylus similar in shape to gnathopod 1, except for length, number and position of some setae; 3 subdistal, long, slightly bifid tooth-like setae of different length near tip of dactylus; inner face of propodus with tufts of plumose setae, and 4 distal, short robust setae; distal margin of palm finely serrate, inner margin of dactylus finely serrate.

Pereopods. Pereopod 3 ( Fig. 5A View FIGURE 5 ) coxa longer than coxa 2; anterior margin irregular, slightly truncate and with one shallow notch in middle part, anterodorsal conical process, one conical process on posterior margin; basis longest, linear, slender, marginal and submarginal setae on posterior margin; ischium shortest; merus slightly longer than carpus, with sparse setae on anterior and posterior margins; carpus with several tufts of short marginal setae; propodus slightly longer than carpus, slender, several tufts of short marginal setae; dactylus slender, curved, about 2/3 length of propodus. Pereopod 4 ( Fig. 5B View FIGURE 5 ) coxa strongly extended ventrally, scythe-shaped, wider than coxae 1–3 combined, anterior margin strongly sinuous, ventrally curving backward; posterior margin strongly excavate with a subacute process; a distal curving cusp, a row of thin, simple setae and patches of small granules parallel to ventral margin, ventral margin linear; basis, ischium, merus, carpus, propodus and dactylus similar in shape and setae to pereopod 3. Pereopod 5 ( Fig. 5C View FIGURE 5 ) coxa longer than coxa 4, with elongate posterior process, posterodistal angle strongly lanceolate, tip reaching to second half of epimeral plate 2, anteroventral margin concave, a medial row of setae; basis elongate, posterior margin slightly concave with minute, marginal setae, anterior margin setose; ischium shortest; merus, carpus and propodus subequal in length, anterior margins with several tufts of simple setae; dactylus slender, slightly curved. Pereopod 6 ( Fig. 5D View FIGURE 5 ) coxa subquadrate, ventral margin with a rounded process; basis expanded mid-posteriorly, anterior margin with several tufts of simple setae; ischium, merus, carpus and dactylus similar to pereopod 5. Pereopod 7 ( Fig. 5E View FIGURE 5 ) coxa shorter than coxa 6; basis strongly expanded posteriorly, several minute facial setae; ischium to dactylus similar to pereopod 6.

Epimera 1‒3 ( Fig. 6A View FIGURE 6 ). Epimera 1 anteroventral corner strongly produced and setose; epimera 2 anteroventral corner convex, posteroventral corner acute; epimera 3 ventral margin slightly rounded, posteroventral corner subacute.

Uropods. Uropod 1 ( Fig. 6B View FIGURE 6 ) peduncle shorter than rami, wider distally, inner margin with short, robust setae, second half of outer margin with similar, robust setae, one robust seta on each distal corner; inner ramus subequal in length to outer ramus; rami with very short, robust setae on both margins. Uropod 2 ( Fig. 6C View FIGURE 6 ) peduncle shorter than rami, slightly wider distally, 6 submarginal robust setae, another on distal corner; inner ramus shorter than outer ramus; rami with very short, robust setae on inner and outer margins. Uropod 3 ( Fig. 6D View FIGURE 6 ) peduncle short, several simple and short marginal setae, a dorsal process and another medial on distal margin; inner ramus shorter than outer ramus, margins with minute, robust setae.

Telson ( Fig. 6E View FIGURE 6 ). Telson about 1.5 x as long as wide, distal margin slightly serrate with minute simple setae, V-shaped cleft, medially straight, 1/16 total length of telson. Color. Freshly collected specimens whitish. Color of fixed specimen similar ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 ). Distribution and ecology. Only known from the type locality (19º19’37”N, 105º26’20”W), off Jalisco, SW Mexico, in the eastern Pacific Ocean, 1609–1643 m depth.
