Type species: Spongia panicea Pallas, 1766
Type locality: The sea around England and Belgium. Burnham-on-Crouch , Essex, about 20 km from mouth of Thames (neotype) .
Definition. “ Halichondria with smooth or digitate surface” ( Erpenbeck & van Soest, 2002).
