Type species Trichonothrus austroafricanus Mahunka, 1986

Trichonothrus was defined by Mahunka (1986) as nothrid mites lacking a medial rostral incision; with a flagellate bothridial seta; epimeral setal formula (15,16)-(5,6)-8-7; anogenital setal formula 9-0-2-3; genital setae distributed across entire plate (i.e. not confined to the median file) and tridactylous. The genus is redefined below.

Apex of rostrum entire; with median triangular region of lighter cuticle. Prodorsum alveolate. Exobothridial seta present, and alveolus of ex 2. Bothridial seta long, flagelliform, recurved apically, smooth, never barbed. Bothridial rim rounded. Notogastral setae barbed, sub-equal in length, 16 pairs in adult and nymphs. Suprapleural scissure present. Hysterosoma expanded, box-like. Notogaster flattened, with circumdorsal scissure in adult. Epimeral plates separated along sternal line in immatures; at least epimeral plates III and IV separated in adults. Genital plates entire, not divided transversely, each with nine setae either aligned in single, median, file or in median and lateral files. Aggenital setae absent; two pairs of anal setae; three pairs of adanal setae. Epimeral plates I with 12– 16 barbed setae; II with 5–7; III with 7–8; IV with 7–11.
