Remarks. This large silurid is a highly esteemed food ®sh and commands a high price in the local markets. Hemisilurus moolenburghi exhibits sexual dimorphism in both morphology and colour. Like most other silurid genera, males have more prominent serrations on the posterior edge of the pectoral spine than females and simple unbranched maxillary barbels (®gure 6) while females have elongated maxillary barbels with the tips branching into three ®laments. Sexual dimorphism in morphology has been recorded for other species of Hemisilurus (see Bornbusch and Lundberg, 1989). Crabs ( Varuna yui Hwang and Takeda, 1986 ; family Grapsidae ) and prawns ( Macrobrachium sp. ; family Palaemonidae ) were found in the guts of two specimens dissected.
