Lectotype (Verdcourt in Milne-Redhead & Polhill, Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Leguminosae 4: 696. 1971): [icon] " Phaseolus niger Lablab " in Alpino, De Plantis Aegypti: 74, 75. 1640.

Current name: Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet subsp. purpureus View in CoL ( Fabaceae : Faboideae ).

Note: Fawcett & Rendle (Fl. Jamaica 4: 70. 1920) indicated material in LINN as type but 900.1 (LINN) lacks the Species Plantarum number (i.e. “1”), was a later addition to the herbarium, and is not original material for the name. Although Westphal (Pulses Ethiopia, Taxon. Agric. Signif.: 97. 1974) rejected an earlier type choice of an Alpino illustration made by Verdcourt in favour of Burser material, Verdcourt’s choice has priority.
