Key to the genus Protanura

In 1982, Deharveng, in his PhD thesis concerning the European Neanurinae , prepared a key to all species of the genus. New data on the morphology of P. papillata (presented here) and P. pseudomuscorum (published by Jordana et al. 1997) provided the basis for its updating.

1. Head with 3+3 eyes.................................................................................. 2

- Head with 2+2 eyes.................................................................................... 3

2. Mandible with one basal tooth.......................................................... mediterranea ( Malta)

- Mandible with three basal teeth............................................................ monticellii ( Italy)

3. Body yellow, mandible with four teeth......................................................... lutea ( Greece)

- Body bluish-grey, mandible with higher number of teeth..................................................... 4

4. Mandible with three basal teeth, chaeta O absent, tubercles Di on abd. IV fused........... papillata ( Lebanon, Israel, Iran)

- Mandible with two basal teeth, chaeta O present, tubercles Di on abd. IV separate................................. 5

5. Lamellae of maxilla smooth and without denticles, tubercle Dl on head with 4 chaetae, tubercle Af and Cl on head separate.................................................................................... deharvengi ( Morocco)

- Lamellae of maxilla with numerous denticles, tubercle Dl on head with 6 chaetae, tubercle Af and Cl on head fused...................................................................... pseudomuscorum ( France, Italy, Spain, Algeria)
