Lectotype (Tucker & al. in Taxon 29: 235, f. 6. 1980): [icon] " Mentha spicis brevioribus & habitioribus, foliis Menthae fuscae, sapore fervido Piperis " in Ray, Syn. Meth. Stirp. Brit., ed. 3: 234, t. 10, f. 2. 1724. - Typotype: Herb. Sherard No. 926 ( OXF) .

Current name: Mentha x piperita L. ( Lamiaceae ).

Note: Graham (in Watsonia 2: 31. 1951) wrongly regarded a specimen in Herb. Buddle (which would not have been seen by Linnaeus and is not original material) as "the type".
