Bryomyia multispinata Berest, 1988 View in CoL —new junior synonym of Bryomyia gibbosa (Felt, 1907)
Material studied: holotype male and paratype male, with the data as specified in the original description ( Berest 1988b). The specimen labeled paratype is numbered 16-84-a-1 ( Fig. 1A View FIGURE 1 A – B ), which according to the original publication designates the holotype; it is the same specimen whose genitalia were illustrated by Berest (1988b: fig. 1). Conversely, the specimen labeled holotype and numbered 16-84-a-2 ( Fig. 1B View FIGURE 1 A – B ) should be considered the paratype.
The two specimens representing B. multispinata belong to B. gibbosa in my opinion. The genitalic illustration of B. multispinata ( Berest 1988b: fig. 1) seems to suggest otherwise, but is erroneous in many respects. For instance, a double series of ‘spinulae’ drawn in the center of the copulatory organ (perhaps therefore the species name, multispinata ) turned out to be muscle fibers, whose edges are darkly accentuated. The genitalia typical of B. gibbosa were illustrated by Jaschhof (1998: fig. 80a–d). In a later publication ( Berest & Titar 2002), Berest synonymized B. multispinata with B. cerasi (Felt, 1907) , a species she regarded as distinct from B. gibbosa , while previous authors ( Pritchard 1947, Jaschhof 1998) had synomymized B. cerasi with B. gibbosa .
