Morophagoides breviculus sp. nov.
[Japanese name: Hime-shiitake-ohirozukoga] Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 B, 2B, 4A–H
Diagnosis. In the male genitalia, the uncal lobes are round, the apex of the uncus is acute, the inner surface of the valva is covered with membrane on the basal half and the valva is posteriorly angular. In the female genitalia, the lateral margin of the ostium bursae is angular, the concavity of the posterior margin of the ostium bursae is about 2/ 3 as long as the ostium bursae, the antrum is slender and about 4/5 as long as the apophysis anterioris.
Description. Length of forewing 7.1–8.0mm; forewing expanse 15.6–16.2mm.
Wing ( Figs 1 View FIGURE 1 B, 2B): Resembling M. moriutii , but differing as follows: fringe of forewing and hindwing shorter than those of M. moriutii .
Male genitalia ( Figs 4 View FIGURE 4 A–F): Uncal lobes round; apex of uncus acute. Valva with angular posterior lobe; inner surface of valva membranous on basal half. Phallus about 18 times as long as broad in middle.
Female genitalia ( Figs 4 View FIGURE 4 G–H): Concavity of posterior margin of ostium bursae about 2/3 as long as ostium bursae. Lateral margin of ostium bursae angular. Antrum slender and about 4/5 as long as apophysis anterioris.
Distribution. JAPAN: Honshu (Yamaguchi).
Etymology. The name breviculus , “short” in Latin, refers to the fringes, which are shorter than in any other Morophagoides species.
Specimens examined. HOLOTYPE ♂, (Type No. 3454) [Honshu] (Yamaguchi Pref.) Kiriyama, Kudamatsushi, 24, vi, 2013, H. Sugimoto leg, deposited in Entomological Laboratory, Kyushu University (ELKU). PARATYPES [Honshu] (Yamaguchi Pref.) 6♂ 4♀, Kiriyama, Kudamatsu-shi, 22, ix, 2012, H. Sugimoto leg.
Remarks. The fringes of the forewing and hindwing are shorter than those of other Morophagoides species. This species only occurs in Yamaguchi Pref., the Chugoku region, Japan. This species is reported as a pest of shiitake mushrooms in Yamaguchi Pref.. The male and female genital morphology of this species is close to that of M. moriutii , but the caudal part of the valva is angular, not blunt as in M. moriutii and the antrum of the female is more slender than in M. moriutii . The apex of the uncus of this species, as well as that of M. moriutii and M. iranensis , is acute and not divergent as in other species.
