Morophagoides robinsoni sp. nov.

[Japanese name: Kii-shiitake-ohirozukoga] Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 E, 2E, 7A–H

Morophagoides moriutii: Robinson, 1986: 68 View in CoL , figs. 81.

Diagnosis. In the male genitalia, the uncal lobes are round, the apex of the uncus is roundly divergent, the inner surface of the valva is almost covered with membrane and the valva is ventrally angular. In the female genitalia, the lateral margin of the ostium bursae is angular, the concavity of the posterior margin of the ostium bursae is about 1/ 2 as long as the ostium bursae, the antrum is stout and about 1/2 as long as the apophysis anterioris.

Description. Length of forewing 7.6–10.0mm; forewing expanse 15.9–21.8mm.

Wing ( Figs 1 View FIGURE 1 E, 2E). Resembling M. moriutii .

Male genitalia ( Figs 7 View FIGURE 7 A–F): Uncal lobes round; apex of uncus roundly divergent. Valva with angular ventral lobe; inner surface of valva almost membranous. Phallus about 14 times as long as broad in middle.

Female genitalia ( Figs 7 View FIGURE 7 G–H): Concavity of posterior margin of ostium bursae about 1/2 as long as ostium bursae. Lateral margin of ostium bursae angular. Antrum stout and about 1/2 as long as apophysis anterioris.

Distribution. JAPAN: Honshu (Nara, Osaka and Wakayama)

Etymology. The specific name is dedicated to Dr G. S. Robinson, who illustrated the male genitalia of this species in 1986 for the first time.

Specimen examined. HOLOTYPE ♂, [Honshu] (Osaka Pref.) Mt Izumikatsuragi, Kaizuka-shi, 5, vi, 1961, T. Saito leg, deposited in Entomological Laboratory, Osaka Prefecture University (ELOUP). PARATYPES [Honshu] (Osaka Pref.) 4♂ 1♀, Mt Izumikatsuragi, Kaizuka-shi, 5, vi, 1961, T. Saito leg; same locality, 1♀, 21. vi. 1993, T. Ueda leg. (Nara Pref.) 1♂ 1♀, Mt Wasamata, Kamikitayama-mura, 28. vii. 1986, S. Moriuti leg; 1♀, same locality, 24. vii. 1992, Kadohara leg. 1♀, Ohdaigahara, Kamikitayama-mura, 14. vii. 1961, T. Saito leg. 1♀, Mt Hokozaidake, Totsukawa-mura, 3. viii. 1978, T. Saito leg. (Wakayama Pref.) 1♀, Hirai, Kozagawa-cho, 14. vi. 2006, B. W. Lee leg.

Remarks. Wing markings and wing shape of this species are very similar to those of other Morophagoides species. Further examination is required to discriminate the species by appearance. This species has only been collected in the Kii peninsula. In Osaka Pref. this species was found from rotten wood of Fagus crenata Blume and bracket fungus. But the detailed larval biology is unknown, nor has it been reported that shiitake mushrooms are injured by this species. Robinson (1986) illustrated the male genitalia of this species as M. moriutii on the basis of a specimen which was captured on Mt Wasamata.
