Adult. ( Fig. 3B View FIGURE 3 ). See also Janse (1954, Pl. 157, Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 - adult; Pl. 162, Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 - labial palpus). Wingspan 13 – 14 mm.
Diagnosis. The long, needle-like 3 rd segment of labial palpus is a distinct diagnostic character to separate A. phaeocrossis from its allies.
Male genitalia. See Janse (1954, Pl. 152, Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 - photo). Similar to those of A. cosymbota , but the valva is less slender and the aedeagus is straightened in distal third in A. phaeocrossis while valva is broader and aedeagus is not straightened in distal third in A. cosymbota .
Material examined. Type no. 571, ♂ (holotype), [ South Africa], Transvaal, Pilgrims Rest, Skea, xii [19]20, Coll. Janse. Paratypes ♂: Types no. 572 and 573, gen. slide no. 3737.
Distribution. South Africa (Mpumalanga) (Meyrick 1937).
Remarks. The species was described, based on four males collected in December by A.J.T. Janse.
