Endemic to the Atlantic Forest ( Sobral et al. 2009) from the Northeast to Southern regions of Brazil ( Govaerts et al. 2010, Proença & Sobral 2006). In the Northeast, it is found in the States of Bahia ( Sobral et al. 2010), Pernambuco ( Griz & Machado 1998), and new records of this species for State of Alagoas are presented here. Trees 6–8 m tall. It differs from Gomidesia blanchetiana in having larger leaves (12–15 cm long) with attenuate bases and petioles c. 5 mm long; it differs from other Myrcia species by having a sulcate midvein on the adaxial lamina surface, imbricate, equal and apiculate calyx, lobes, a pilose hypanthium and base of style and globose fruit.
