Jolly’s Mouse Lemur

Taxonomy. Microcebus jollyae Louis et al., 2006 View in CoL ,
Madagascar, province of Fianarantsoa, Kianjavato (c.21° 23’ S, 47° 52’ E).
This species is monotypic.
Distribution. SE coastal Madagascar, known only from its type locality at Kianjavato, just S of the Mananjary River, and from nearby Mananjary to the NE; it may also be found just S of the Mananara River N to the N bank of the Mananjary River. View Figure
Descriptive notes. Head-body c.13 cm, tail ¢.12 cm; weight 49 g. The dorsal coat of Jolly’s Mouse Lemur is a uniform reddish-brown on the body and head. There are small white patches on the rostrum and under the mandible, the latter blending with the gray ventral coat.
Habitat. Lowland coastal rainforest.
Food and Feeding. There is no specific information available for this species, but undoubtedly fruits and insects are eaten, and possibly other items identified in the diets of other members of the genus.
Breeding. There is no information available for this species.
Activity patterns. Jolly’s Mouse Lemur is nocturnal and arboreal.
Movements, Home range and Social organization. There is no information available for this species.
Status and Conservation. CITES Appendix I. Classified as Data Deficient on The IUCN Red List. However, at the IUCN/SSC Lemur Red-Listing Workshop held in July 2012, Jolly’s Mouse Lemur was assessed as endangered due to its small extent of occurrence and ongoing decline. Jolly’s Mouse Lemur is not known to occur in any protected areas, but it may be found in Manombo Special Reserve. It is present in the Kianjavato Classified Forest, which offers some degree of protection. No estimates of population size are available.
