Hylomys megalotis Jenkins and M. F. Robinson 2002

Hylomys megalotis Jenkins and M. F. Robinson 2002 , Bull. Nat. Hist. Mus. Lond. (Zool.), 68: 2.

Type Locality: Laos, Khammouan Province, Khammouan Limestone National Biodiversity Conservation Area, Thakhek district, c. 18 km N Thakhek, environs of Ban Muang and Ban Doy, 17°33’15’’N, 104°49’30’’E. GoogleMaps

Vernacular Names: Long-eared Gymnure.

Distribution: Known only from the type locality.

Discussion: A very distinct species with long ears and a long skull. Jenkins and Robinson (2002) performed a phylogenetic analysis of skeletal characters of the species of Galericinae and included five species in Hylomys . They did not, however, consider paleontological data presented by Mein and Ginsburg (1997) who retained Neotetracus and Neohylomys as separate genera. A genetic study is warranted to test the phylogenetic hypothesis presented by Jenkins and Robinson (2002).
