Paratetrapedia (Lophopedia) View in CoL
Paratetrapedia (Lophopedia) Michener & Moure, 1957: 413 . Types species: Tetrapedia pygmaea Schrottky, 1902 View in CoL , by original designation
Paratetrapedia (Amphipedia) Michener & Moure, 1957: 413 . Type species: Tetrapedia haeckeli Friese, 1910 View in CoL , by original designation. New synonymy.
Michener & Moure (1957), when proposing the name Amphipedia , based their description on partly misidentified material of the type species. The type material of the type species of this subgenus, Tetrapedia haeckeli View in CoL , deposited in the ZMB (see below) belongs in the subgenus Lophopedia , as delimited by Michener & Moure (1957). This makes Amphipedia equivalent to Lophopedia . As first revisers, we place Amphipedia as a synonym of Lophopedia .
Apparently, Michener & Moure (1957) examined one female, from the MZSP collection, which truly corresponds to P. haeckeli , but their description of Amphipedia was based on material belonging to Paratetrapedia (Tropidopedia) punctifrons ( Smith, 1879) , new combination. A complete taxonomic treatment of this species will appear in a forthcoming revision of the group. The drawings presented in Michener & Moure’s paper (their figs. 13–15) of male S7–S8 and genital capsule, indicated as being of P. haeckeli , correspond to those of P. punctifrons , and all the material in DZUP identified as P. haeckeli in reality corresponds to P. punctifrons . Also, the characterization of Amphipedia by Michener & Moure (1957) clearly agrees with the features found in P. punctifrons .
Under the synonymies established here, the group of species for which Michener & Moure (1957) proposed the name Amphipedia remains without a formal name. Besides P. punctifrons , this group contains seven additional undescribed species (Aguiar, unpublished). As already recognized by Michener & Moure, it is closely related to Tropidopedia . Instead of proposing a new name, we opted to expand Tropidopedia to include this group of species as well. A complete revision of Tropidopedia sensu lato will be presented in a forthcoming paper.
