Luehea cymulosa Spruce ex Bentham(1861:58) View in CoL .
Lectotype (designated here):— BRAZIL. Amazonas: igapó of Rio Solimoes at Managuiry , fl., June 1851, Spruce 1594 (A) ( K! [ K000381834 ], p.p. ; isolectotypes E! [ E00265865 ] ; G! [ G00357096 ], p.p. ; G! [ G00357097 ], p.p. ; G! [ G00357098 ] ; GH! [ GH00052365 ], p.p. ; K! [ K001209752 ] ; M! [ M0210183 ], p.p. ; MG! [ MG019585 ] ; NY! [ NY00415478 ], p.p. ; P! [ P02142943 ] ; P! [ P02142944 ], p.p. ; TCD! [ TCD0003767 ] ). Igapó of Rio Negro , fr., July 1851, Spruce 1594 (B) (syntypes G! [ G00357096 ], p.p. ; G! [ G00357097 ], p.p. ; GH! [ GH00052365 ], p.p. ; K! [ K000381833 ], p.p. ; K! [ K001209750 ] ; M! [ M0210183 ], p.p. ; NY! [ NY00415478 ], p.p. ; P! [ P02142944 ], p.p. ).
Bentham (1861) described in the protologue of Luehea cymulosa the characters of flower and fruits, and the two locations cited in the original labels, based on the collection by Spruce 1594. Richard Spruce collected in the Amazon region between the years 1849–1864, and George Bentham received and distributed the material in Europe, besides to use some of them to describe new species. All this material was in part included in Herbarium Benthamianum, preferably the samples with the original labels written by Spruce. The remaining material was sent to other herbaria, but with a standard label printed by Bentham, on which he wrote the collection number and species name.
We found many duplicates of Spruce 1594 in several herbaria, but representing two distinct collections, one collected with flowers in June 1851 on Rio Solimões , and other collected with fruits in July 1851 on Rio Negro. We can thus distinguish three types of sheets: with the two distinct specimens, each one with original Spruce´s labels, and respective barcodes (K); with the two specimens but with only one label printed by Bentham and one barcode (G, GH, K, M, NY, P); and with only the flowering specimen with the label printed by Bentham and one barcode (E, G, K, MG, P, TCD).
As there are two specimens under the same Spruce number, but collected on different dates and locations, we recognize them as syntypes. In most of the specimens found, the two collections are mounted on the same sheet, thus requiring them to be identified as pro parte (p.p.). So, it is necessary to provide a lectotype to the name L. cymulosa and distinguish the specimens as follow: the flowering specimen collected in Rio Solimões, in June, as Spruce 1594 (A), and the fruiting specimen collected in Rio Negro, in July, as Spruce 1594 (B) (see Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ).
Analysing the four specimens from K, only one of them (with two barcodes, K000381833 and K000381834) really belonged to Bentham’s herbarium. It has the original stamp Herbarium Benthamianum with the date of arrival of the material (1854), that is, prior to the publication of the species, and with the original labels written by Spruce. In accordance with Art. 9.3 of the ICN, we designate here the specimen Spruce 1594 (A) (K [K000381834]) as the lectotype of L. cymulosa and we will consider the specimen Spruce 1594 (B) as the remaining syntype ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ).
