Diagnosis: S. fanjingshanensis can be distinguished from all other Sparassis species by the combination of following morphological traits. Basidiomata large, up to 25 cm high and 30 cm diam, light-gray to light-khaki, flabellae, compactly arranged, entire, broadly spathulate, slightly contorted, surface glabrous. Stem with concentric ring ornamentation.

Holotype: China. Guizhou Province: Tongren, Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve (27°55'59" N, 108°42'28" W, 2295 m above the sea level), Collected from the subalpine mixed coniferous forest in October 2022 GoogleMaps . Isotypes were deposited at the Edible Fungi Engineering Center of the Tongren Polytechnic College.

Etymology: Named for its occurrence in Fanjingshan regions in southwestern China.

Description: Basidioma ( Fig. 2a View FIGURE 2 ) annual, solitary, stipitate, up to 25 cm high and 30 cm diam, closely arranged flabella arising from a central gray stipe. light-gray to light-khaki when fresh, grayish to grayish brown when dry; flabellae broad 3-6 cm, up to 1 mm in thickness, compactly arranged, entire, broadly spathulate, slightly contorted, surface glabrous, top margin undulate, split into pieces that fused with other flabellae several times below the top margin; Context tough, pliant, concolorous with surface. Odor strong and pleasant. Taste not recorded.

Basidiospores ( Fig. 2b View FIGURE 2 ) broadly ellipsoid to subglobose, 4.5-7.5×3.5-4.0 μm, smooth, hyaline, thin-walled; hyphal system monomitic; basidia ( Fig. 2c View FIGURE 2 ) 49-66×5-7 μm, narrowly elongate-subclavate, 4-spored, hyaline, usually with a basal clamp connection; Subhymenium hyaline, thin-walled, tortuous, densely, common presence of clamp connections; Trama hyphal colorless and hyaline, septate, thin- to thick-walled, 3.7-7 μm diam, frequently branched, clamp connections absent. Gloeoplerous hyphae present, flexuous, thin-walled, 4-10 μm diam.

Habitat and distribution: Solitary on soil, near the roots of living Abies or near subalpine bamboos in Fanjing Mountain, Guizhou Province.
