Measurements. Paratype (Salama., Guate., AMNH), BL: 9.3 mm; BW: 4.7 mm.
Diagnosis ( Figs 30 View FIGURES 28–31 , 105 View FIGURES 103–106 ). Amblycerus spondiae is characterized by the following characters combination: eyes distant from each other anteriorly, ocular index: 2.7 ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 28–31 ); pronotum subquadrate with lateral margins slightly curved and lateral carina almost reaching the posterior margin of pronotum ( Figs 54, 56 View FIGURES 54–57 ), with median strip of setae and tufts in lateral margins ( Fig. 56 View FIGURES 54–57 ); scutellum tridentate with median tooth longer than the lateral ones (Fig. 73); first tarsomere about 3.5 times the length of the median spur; median lobe of male genitalia about 4.4 times as long as its greatest width at apical region ( Fig. 105 View FIGURES 103–106 ); internal sac in the apical region with a pair of hollow, subtriangular sclerites ( Fig. 105 View FIGURES 103–106 ). It shares some similarities externally and in relation to genitalia with A. alternatus , but differs from it by the distinct frontoclypeal suture (indistinct in A. alternatus ), cervical boss with three setae (two setae in A. alternatus ); metaventrite with median sulcus longer than a half the lenght of metaventrite (about half as long as metaventrite in A. alternatus ) and apical region with a pair of hollow, subtriangular, non-tuberculate sclerites (with a pair of hollow, subtriangular tuberculate sclerites in A. alternatus ). Amblycerus spondiae differs from A. cuernavacensis by the lateral carina almost reaching the posterior margin of pronotum (reaching the posterior margin of pronotum in A. cuernavacensis ), cervical boss with three setae (two setae in A. cuernavacensis ) and scutellum tridentate with median tooth longer than the others (all teeth with same length in A. cuernavacensis ). Amblycerus spondiae differs from A. vitis by the apical sclerite with acute, curved apex (apical sclerite with acute, straight apex in A. vitis ) and in median region with a short, unpaired wishbone sclerite (longer wishbone sclerite in A. vitis ).
Distribution ( Fig. 121 View FIGURES 120–121 ). Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras (new country record), Costa Rica and Panama.
Life History. According to Kingsolver (1980), the oviposition by A. spondiae is apparently on fruits or endocarps on the ground. Adults have been observed on clumps of Spondias endocarps that had passed through the alimentary tract of monkeys, and on endocarps of Hippomane from which the fleshy exocarp had been sloughed off.
Host Plants (Tab. II). Anacardiaceae : Spondias mombin L., Spondias radlkoferi Donn. -Sm. Boraginaceae : Cordia dodecandra DC. Capparaceae : Capparis sp. (new record). Euphorbiaceae : Hippomane mancinella L. Rhamnaceae : Ziziphus mexicanus .
