scientific name

Giraffa camelopardalis
status

(4) northern giraffe ( G. camelopardalis View in CoL ),

which includes Nubian giraffe ( G. c. camelopardalis )

and its new synonym, Rothschild’s giraffe ( G. c. rothschildi ),

with Kordofan giraffe ( G. c. antiquorum )

and West African giraffe ( G. c. peralta )

as distinct subspecies. In the face of small population sizes, especially for the West African giraffe ( Table 1 View Table 1 ), concerted conservation efforts are necessary for preserving these genetically differentiated subspecies.
