Odontoceridae Wallengren View in CoL

Odontoceridae Wallengren, 1891: 12 View in CoL [listed as a family without description].

Odontoceridae Ulmer, 1907c View in CoL : 11,122 [first description of the family].

The forewing postanal vein (sensu Schmid 1998) forms a synapomorphy supporting the monophyly of Philorheithridae View in CoL and Odontoceridae View in CoL (Weaver et al. [submitted]). Sexual dimorphism is frequent in the wing venation of several species in the family. A sclerotized and microtrichous forewing anal lobe is frequently present on the base. The wing venation is variously reduced compared to the Philorheithridae View in CoL . In the forewings, the discoidal cell is present and closed, and the median cell is open or absent in both sexes; the thyridial cell is present in females, but lacking in the males of the 2 genera Marilia View in CoL and Psilotreta View in CoL , and in Pseudogoera View in CoL since the M stem is missing. The extinct species Electrocerum pedestre Ulmer from Baltic Amber, and extant members of the genera Barypenthus Burmeister View in CoL , Namamyia Banks View in CoL , Perissoneura McLachlan View in CoL , Barynema Banks View in CoL , Parthina Denning View in CoL , Nerophilus Banks View in CoL , Pseudogoera Carpenter View in CoL , Lannapsyche Malicky View in CoL , Phraepsyche Malicky & Chantaramongkol , and Anastomoneura Huamantinco & Nessimian all have closed thyridial cells in the male forewings. Reduction of the median vein occurs otherwise only in the Molannidae View in CoL and in the Beraeidae View in CoL . Mesoscutellar setal warts are usually single, large, ovoid and sparsely covered with setae, but in Barypenthus View in CoL they are paired and small. The apicomesal nodule on the first maxillary palp segments is usually absent, but may be present in some taxa, like in species within Lannapsyche View in CoL .
