Gyrocochlea conferta: Iredale 1937: 322 View in CoL ; Iredale 1941a: 268; Smith 1992: 190; Stanisic et al. 2010: 550 (in synonymy).
Type locality. Port Stephens, NSW.
Diagnosis. Shell very small yellowish brown, planispiral with weakly depressed spire. Protoconch sculpture primarily spiral consisting of 27 prominent, crowded, low, broad spiral cords and very weak, irregularly spaced, underlying radial ridges. Teleoconch sculpture of numerous, prominent, quite uniformly spaced, slightly sinuate, orthocline to opisthocline radial ribs. Ribs on body whorl 125–152 (mean 138). Umbilicus wide cup-shaped.
Type material examined. Lectotype (here designated). AM C.63493, Port Stephens , coll. Rev. R. L. King.
Paralectotype. AM C. 472884, same data as lectotype .
Description. Shell very small yellowish brown, planispiral with weakly depressed spire. Whorls 3.87–4.00, tightly coiled, the last weakly inflated and descending in front. Sutures strongly impressed. Shell diameter 4.06–4.47 mm (mean 4.27 mm) height 2.32–2.45 mm (mean 2.39 mm), H/D 0.55–0.57 (mean 0.56). Protoconch of 1.12 whorls, diameter 0.60–0.62 mm. Protoconch sculpture primarily spiral consisting of 27 prominent, crowded, low, broad spiral cords and very weak, irregularly spaced, underlying radial ridges. Teleoconch sculpture of numerous, prominent, quite uniformly spaced, slightly sinuate, orthocline to opisthocline radial ribs. Ribs on body whorl 125–152 (mean 138), width of interstices on the first teleoconch whorl equal to width of four to less than six ribs; on the penultimate whorl equal to width of three to less than four ribs; each rib with two or more overlapping periostracal blades. Interstitial sculpture of low prominent microradial ribs and low, weaker microspiral cords forming weak beads at their intersection; number of microradials between ribs on the first teleoconch whorl 7–8; on first quarter of body whorl 8. Aperture narrowly ovately-lunate. Parietal callus prominent, transparent. Umbilicus wide cup-shaped, diameter 1.13–1.20 mm (mean 1.17 mm), D/U 3.59–3.71 (mean 3.65). Based on 2 measured adults.
Anatomy unknown.
Distribution and habitat. Known only from the locality which is imprecisely defined; habitat and microhabitat unknown.
Remarks. Comboynea conferta ( Hedley, 1924) n. comb. has not been re-located since the original specimens (lectotype and paralectotype here designated) were collected. The lectotype and paralectotype are distinguished by their comparatively large size from any recently collected material from Port Stephens and adjacent hinterland. This is an area that has been highly impacted by human development and in which many species have small circumscribed ranges. Co. conferta is included here largely on the basis of the protoconch sculpture of one of the syntypes bearing most resemblance to other Comboynea species. However, the wide cup-shaped umbilicus is not consistent with the narrow U-shaped umbilicus of Co. boorganna , Co. mountaineer and Co. winghamensis . A lectotype has been designated in the expectation that conspecifics may yet be located.
Type species. Cancellocochlea coolongolook View in CoL n. sp. —here designated.
Etymology. From the Latin cancellus = net and cochlea = snail, referring to the net-like protoconch sculpture.
