Tympallopatrum aureolum View in CoL new species

( Figures 2 View FIGURE 2 , 6, 10 View FIGURES 9 – 12 )

Type Material. Holotype (male): Western Australia, 12 km W. Walpole, Walpole Nat. Pk., Mt. Clare, Eucalyptus cornuta litter; 34° 59' S, 116° 38' E, 20 December 1976, FMHD #76517, J. Kethley; deposited in the ANIC. Paratypes: Same data as holotype (20 FMNH): Torndirrup Nat. Pk., peppermint litter in small grove near main road; FMHD #76539, elev. 223.7232 m, 35° 5' S, 117° 52' E, 28 December 1976, J. Kethley (1 FMNH). Representative specimens to be deposited in MCZ and WAMP.

Diagnosis. Recognized by the relatively deep and wide pronotal foveae ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ), the smooth shining depressed areas of the elytra, the very weak posterior angles of the pronotum, the brown dorsum with faint yellowish maculae near base and at summit of posterior declivity, the goldenyellowish setae, and the median oval fovea of the metasternum. Readily distinguished from the other brownish species, T. longitudum , by the markedly interrupted elytral costae, the more oval form, and the slightly more transverse pronotum.

Description. Size (length/width, mm) holotype: body (length to elytral apices) 1.57/ 0.69, head 0.28/0.42, pronotum 0.42/0.56, elytra 0.97/0.69. Form elongate oval, transversely quite convex. Dorsum brown, head dark brown, ocelli yellow, elytra with diffuse yellowish maculae near base and near summit of posterior declivity; setae yellowish to goldish.

Labrum deflexed, wider than long, in males with small dentiform apicomedian process and basomedian fovea, in females simple. Frons and clypeus setose, more densely so laterally. Frons with median oval setose tumidity.

Pronotal disc with anterior oval fovea, between setose costae, 2–3 times as large as fovea behind it, relief between foveae well developed; punctures and granules in anterior fovea forming two longitudinal series. Pronotal lateral margin granulate and setose, arcuate, posterior angles obsolete.

Elytral sculpture complex, strongly punctate, with strongly setose costae and shining depressed areas as illustrated ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ). Elytral margin minutely granulate and setose.

Metasternal disc dull, with large oval median fovea. Aedeagus length 0.55 mm ( Fig. 6).

Etymology. Named in reference to the golden yellow setae.
