comb. nov.

1. Fallopia × heterocarpa (Beck) Doweld View in CoL , comb. nov. [ F. convolvulus ( Linnaeus 1753: 364) Löve (1970: 300) × F.

dumetorum ( Linnaeus 1762: 522) Holub (1971: 176) View in CoL ].

Basionym:— Polygonum × heterocarpum Beck (1906: 88) View in CoL Fagopyrum × heterocarpum (Beck) Nyárády (1941: 134) View in CoL Tiniaria × heterocarpa (Beck) Janchen (1956: 131) View in CoL , comb. inval. (ICN, Art. 41.5).

= Polygonum ×convolvuloides Brügger View in CoL (11–21 Nov 1886 a: 102), nom. illeg. non Conwentz (27 Aug 1886: 48) nec Nikitin (1957: 136), nom. illeg. (Art. 53.1) ≡ Fagopyrum ×convolvuloides Degen et al. (1924: 78) 1 ≡ Bilderdykia ×convolvuloides View in CoL (Degen & al.) Janchen (1960: 912), comb. inval. (Art. 41.5) ≡ Fallopia ×convolvuloides View in CoL (Degen & al.) Holub (1971: 176).

Type (lectotype here designated):— CZECH REPUBLIC. Sloupnice, near Praha, August 1881, Beck s.n. (PRC-455340!) ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ).

Note:— Polygonum convolvuloides Conwentz (1886: 48) was described on the basis of fruit remains in amber of the Upper Eocene age from the shores of former East Prussia ( Germany), now Kaliningrad region of Russian Federation (see IFPNI: http://fossilplants.info/names/ DD80C16F-BFED-4790-85C1-587BCFE28C52). Brügger (1886a: 102, 1886b: 147) used the same specific epithet convolvuloides for a hybrid from Switzerland, P. ×convolvuloides Brügger [ P. convolvulus Linnaeus (1753: 364) × P. dumetorum Linnaeus (1762: 522) ]. On the basis of the date of publication of these names ( Polygonum convolvuloides Conwentz [27 August 1886] vs. P. ×convolvuloides Brügger [11–21 November 1886 & 22 December 1886], see details below), the Brügger’s name is a later homonym of the Conwentz’s one. According to the modern treatment of Polygonaceae (see e.g., Holub 1971), the Brügger’s nothospecies belongs to Fallopia , while the name P. × heterocarpum Beck (1906: 88) is here resurrected being the earliest available name for the extant nothospecies (see Rechinger 1958: 432).

Two described hybrid forms of Polygonum ×convolvuloides Brügger , easily distinguished by the fruit characters (see Lawalrée 1952), were also formally recombined under F. × heterocarpa (Beck) Doweld :
