Key to species of Phoomyia View in CoL and related dolichopodine genera
1 Body non-metallic; thorax either densely grey pruinose, or yellow-orange with dark longitudinal stripe to mainly black; abdomen either dark grey-brown to partly yellow, or mostly orange yellow with black dorsolateral spots; 6 dorsocentrals with fifth pair strongly offset medially, or 5 dorsocentrals aligned in row; vein M beyond crossvein dm-cu with strong anterior bend and convergent with R4+5 (cf. Fig. 3B); female terminalia with tergite 10 undivided, narrow and acutely V-shaped with acanthophorite spine-like setae encircling apex, tergite 8 sometimes with rod-like apicolateral projections that protrude from the tip of the abdomen...................................................................................... 2
- Body usually metallic; 5–6 (rarely 7) dorsocentrals, aligned or with penultimate pair weakly offset medially; venation variable, M with or without anterior bend; female terminalia with tergite 10 divided medially, not acutely V-shaped, hemitergites broad with transverse row of acanthophorite spine-like setae, tergite 8 lacking rod-like apicolateral projections.................................................................................................... other Dolichopodinae View in CoL
2 Hind basitarsus with 1 strong dorsal seta (Fig. 3C); male hind tibia with bifurcate posteroapical projection (Fig. 3C); male hind basitarsus without posterobasal projection; male cercus strongly reduced, not longer than surstylus ( Figs 1 View FIGURE 1 B, 2B); female tergite 8 without apical projections ( Figs 1 View FIGURE 1 E, 1F); face broad in both sexes (Oriental)............... Phoomyia View in CoL gen. nov. … 4
- Hind basitarsus without strong dorsal seta; male hind tibia without bifurcate posteroapical projection; male hind basitarsus with or without comma-shaped posterobasal projection; male cercus large and longer than surstylus; female tergite 8 with a pair of rod-like apical projections that protrude from the abdomen (see Brooks 2005, figs 6A, 6B, 7A,7B); face broad or narrow................................................................................................ 3
3 Thorax densely grey pruinose, 6 dorsocentrals with fifth pair strongly offset medially; abdomen dark grey-brown to partly yellow; face broad in both sexes; male hind basitarsus with comma-shaped posterobasal projection; crossvein dm-cu located near middle of wing (6 described species, Southern Palaearctic, Afrotropical, Oriental)................. Argyrochlamys Lamb View in CoL
- Thorax yellow-orange with dark longitudinal stripe to mainly black, 5 dorsocentrals aligned in row; abdomen mostly orange yellow with black dorsolateral spots; face of male very narrow (slightly wider in female); male hind basitarsus without comma-shaped posterobasal projection; crossvein dm-cu located near basal third of wing (4 described species, South Africa)........................................................................... Pseudargyrochlamys Grichanov View in CoL
4 Abdominal segments 1 and 2 entirely yellow; setae on thorax whitish; mid tibia with 2 anteroventral setae; male hypopygium partially yellow, cercus with blunt-tipped thumb-like apicolateral projection ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 A); wing length less than 2.5 mm ( Sri Lanka)..................................................................... Phoomyia srilankensis sp. nov.
- Abdominal segments 1 and 2 mainly dark grey (Fig. 3A); setae on thorax brown-yellow; mid tibia with 1 anteroventral seta; male hypopygium dark brown; cercus with acute fin-like apicolateral projection ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 A); wing length more than 2.5 mm ( Thailand).................................................................
