Apotomorhamphus Faust View in CoL
Apotomorhamphus Faust, 1897: 264 View in CoL .
Type species: Apotomorhamphus splendens Faust, 1897 View in CoL , by original designation.
Description. Integument black, largely covered with iridescent scales, or with patches of scales. Head short, with constriction behind eyes; with curved, transverse sulcus separating rostral base deeply incised; vertex with shallow radial furrows, medially effaced. Eyes protruding, asymmetrically convex, drawn posteriad; separated from front margin of prothorax by ca. 0.9 X length of eye. Profile ( Fig. 40c View FIGURE 40 ) anteriorly with marked constriction. Rostrum with dorsum densely squamose, produced backwards to postocular constriction; apical declivity distinct, with sunk-in scales ( Fig. 3c View FIGURE 3 ); dorsal profile subangulate. Antenna. Scape slender, squamose, with suberect setae. Funicle with article 2 ca. 1.3–1.6 X longer than article 1. Pronotum ca. as long as wide (0.96 X); more or less distinctly granulate. Thorax. Metanepisternum largely covered by elytra (fully covered except for triangular anterior portion in A. splendens Faust , somewhat more exposed in other species). Elytra short, subrotund, with 12 regular striae, without protrusions; sutural interval of females above declivity usually with 1–3 large, erect scales absent in males. Legs. Protibia ventrally simple, not denticulate. Venter. Procoxae medially subcontiguous; distance to apex 0.5 X distance to base of prothorax. Mesoventral process elongate, 1.30 X as long as wide. Abdomen. Female ventrites 3–5 exposed, laterally subequal to ventrites 1–2. Genitalia. Penis ( Fig. 2b View FIGURE 2 , 3b View FIGURE 3 , 4b View FIGURE 4 , 5b View FIGURE 5 ) with sides of body subparallel to rounded apex. Apodeme 2.27–2.67 X as long as body of penis, attached to body with flexible loop. Endophallus long, with flagellum.
Notes. Faust (1897) designated A. splendens Faust as type species in his key on page 234. Based on genital characters, this genus is related to Atactoglymma Heller , Bonthaina Heller , Heteroglymma Faust , and Nothes Marshall. Besides several species from the Sulawesi region, two species are recorded from Flores and one from the Moluccan island of Larat. They were originally described as subspecies of A. disjunctus Pascoe, 1885 ( Günther, 1943); wide allopatric ranges appear unlikely in a group of flightless weevils. Their placement within this genus should be verified ( Marshall 1956: 34). A complete revision is outside the scope of this study. Four species closely related to A. splendens Faust, 1897 are revised herein to allow the safe identification of the type species. They are all found on the slopes of Mt. Lompobattang (formely also known as Pic Bonthain), respectively, Mt. Bawakaraeng (two peaks of the same mountain massif) in Southwestern Sulawesi.
