Apiezonotus Heller

Type species: Piezonotus albosignatus Heller, 1935 , by original designation.

Notes. Heller (1935) described the type species as “ Piezonotus (?) albosignatus ” and later placed it in his new genus Apiezonotus ( Heller, 1941) . Marshall (1956) acknowledged that Apiezonotus Heller was only known to him from the original description. At the time, the collection of the SMTD was not accessible. Based on a recent examination of Faust´s types it became obvious that it is a senior synonym of Aulacophrys Marshall. There are a number of Apiezonotus species at hand from the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, which should be revised in a dedicated study. The converging carinae of the head are more or less distinct; this character occurs also in some species of Javaulius Marshall. The conical head lacking a constriction behind the eyes and a patch of scales at the sides of the rostral base may be better diagnostic characters of this genus.
