Idiopsodes Thompson View in CoL
Idiopsodes Thompson, 1977: 256 View in CoL .
Idiopsis Faust, 1897: 293 View in CoL . (non Brauer & Bergenstamm, 1899)
Type species: Idiopsis grisea Faust, 1897 View in CoL , by original designation (on p. 236).
Description. Integument black, largely covered with scales. Head behind eyes with marked constriction; with shallow subangulate furrow separating rostral base; bordering eyes with sparse elongate erect scales forming “eyebrows”; vertex simple, without radial furrows. Eyes large, evenly convex, weakly protruding; separated from front margin of prothorax by ca. length of eye. Profile ( Fig. 40f View FIGURE 40 ) anteriorly with constriction. Rostrum. Dorsum densely squamose, with median furrow; apical declivity indistinct, nude, punctate; dorsal profile evenly convex. Antenna. Scape slender, squamose, with suberect setae. Funicle with article 2 shorter than article 1 (0.7 X). Pronotum as long as wide. Metanepisternum elongate trapezoid. Elytra short, subrotund, with 10 regular striae. Legs. Tibiae ventrally simple, not denticulate. Venter. Procoxae approximate, separated by 0.11 X procoxal diameter; distance to apex 0.8 X distance to base of prothorax. Mesoventral process trapezoid, 1.20 X as long as wide. Abdomen. Female ventrites 3–5 exposed, laterally subequal to ventrites 1–2. Genitalia. Penis ( Fig. 15b View FIGURE 15 ) with sides of body weakly converging to angulate apex. Apodeme 1.77 X as long as body of penis. Endophallus long, with flagellum.
Notes. Heller (1914) placed three species from Bali in this genus ( I. setosapex Heller , T. gitgita Heller, I. radiatifrons Heller ). However, based on both morphological and molecular evidence this is not tenable. Therefore, these species are transferred to Parasyntrophus gen. n. In an unpublished molecular phylogeny, Idiopsodes Thompson is deeply nested in a clade of genera from New Guinea, near Oribius Marshall and Sphenogaster Faust , while Parasyntrophus gen. n. is close to Syntrophus Marshall and Apirocalodes Voss. Idiopsodes Thompson seems to be restricted to the Papuan Peninsula of New Guinea.
