Haematotrephus lanceolatum ( Wedl, 1858) — Type species

Type host. “Stilt”, Himantopus rubropterus Brand (reported by Yamaguti 1971 as Himantopus candidus [Bonnaterre]), but neither are valid species of birds. There are two species of Himantopus Brisson world wide: the black-winged or common stilt, Himantopus himantopus (Linnaeus) and the black-necked stilt, Himantopus mexicanus Müller ( Charadriiformes : Recurvirostridae ), and only H. himantopus would likely be present in Europe.

Remarks. This species was originally described as Monostomum lanceolatum Wedl, 1858 , but it was redescribed and transferred to Haematotrephus by Stossich (1902) who provided only a body length. Stunkard (1966) redescribed what he thought was this species from the air sacs of the American avocet, Recurvirostra americana (Gmelin) ( Charadriiformes : Recurvirostridae ), from the southwestern United States (precise locality unknown). Although the specimens he used for the redescription have a pretesticular ovary that forms a triangle with the testes (Haematotrephinae) and the genital pore is postpharyngeal, the vitelline fields are confluent posteriorly (= Uvitellina ); and therefore, this species would not represent Haematotrephus . No oral or ventral sucker described—Stossich (1902).
