Tagetes patula Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 887. 1753.

“Habitat in Mexico.” RCN: 6417.

Lectotype (Hind in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 92. 1993): Herb. Linn. No. 1009.1 (LINN).

Current name: Tagetes patula L. (Asteraceae).

Note: Tagetes patula was treated as the generitype by Rydberg (N. Amer. Fl. 34: 149. 1915; see McNeill & al. in Taxon 36: 386. 1987). However, under Art. 10.5, Ex. 7 (a voted example) of the Vienna Code, this is a type choice made under the American Code and is to be replaced under Art. 10.5b by Green’s choice (Prop. Brit. Bot.: 182. 1929) of T. erecta L.

Moore (in Fawcett & Rendle, Fl. Jamaica 7: 262. 1936) noted the existence of material in the Clifford herbarium but did not designate a type.
