Diagnostic description. Head lateral cephalic lobe large, narrowly rounded in female, subacute and occasionally down-turned in male. Antenna 1 peduncular article 1 without anterodistal projection. Labrum, epistome and upper lip fused. Mandible palp article 2 anterodistal margin setose; article 3 with marginal and apical setae. Labium without apical stylets on each lobe. Gnathopod 1 parachelate; basis anterior margin with slender setae; propodus posterior margin smooth to weakly crenate. Gnathopod 2 slightly to strongly chelate; carpus long; propodus palm slightly to strongly obtuse, straight; dactylus fitting palm. Pereopod 6 basis posteroventral margin rounded. Pereopod 7 basis, posterior margin almost straight, minutely crenate, posteroventral margin oblique (slightly concave). Epimeron 3 posteroventral corner subquadrate/narrowly rounded. Urosomite 1 dorsally smooth. Uropod 1 outer ramus slightly longer than inner ramus; uropod 2 rami subequal in length; uropod 3 rami subequal in length, inner ramus reaching article 2 of outer ramus.

Depth range. 2–1000 m.

Remarks. This is a common species in Australian waters and exhibits some morphological variability, particularly in the form of the lateral cephalic lobes, which in the male can be variously down-ward pointing, but also in the gnathopod 2 which can be slightly to strongly chelate, but with the dactylus always fitting the palm.

Ren’s (2012) record of Waldeckia australiensis from the South China Sea, although very similar to that species, differs in having apical stylets on the outer lobes of the labium.

Distribution. Australia: South Australia; Tasmania; Victoria; New South Wales; Queensland (Great Barrier Reef); and Taupo and Derwent Hunter Seamounts, Tasman Sea.
